Rank and Decorations

VMF-124 aviators are eligible for promotion and decorations:

  • Rank is a function of responsibilities within the squadron and length of service
  • Decorations are a recognition of combat performance, contributions to the squadron, and heroism

Promotion and decorations are recommended by your superior officer and your fellow aviators. The CO reviews all recommendations. Approved recommendations are forwarded to our parent Marine Air Group (MAG) for confirmation.

Unlike victories, rank and decorations never "reset" – they are permanent.

Rank

VMF-124 ranks follow USMC WWII organization. We are also fortunate to host several experienced British Commonwealth aviators on an exchange basis. As a courtesy, these aviators retain their national ranks.

Grades and their Commonwealth equivalents are listed below:

  • Major = Squadron Leader
  • Captain = Flight Lieutenant
  • 1st Lieutenant = Flying Officer
  • 2nd Lieutenant = Pilot Officer
  • Chief Warrant Officer
  • Master Sergeant
  • Gunnery Sergeant = Flight Sergeant

Decorations

VMF-124 aviators are eligible for many of the same decorations as their WWII counterparts. Out of respect for Marines who have made the ultimate sacrifice, no VMF-124 aviator is eligible to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor. Likewise, our Commonwealth comrades are not eligible for the Victoria Cross.

Decorations and their Commonwealth equivalents are listed below:

  • Navy Cross = Distinguished Service Order
  • Navy Distinguished Service Medal
  • Silver Star
  • Legion of Merit
  • Distinguished Flying Cross = Distinguished Flying Cross
  • Navy-Marine Corps Medal
  • Purple Heart
  • Air Medal = Mentioned in Dispatches
  • Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal
  • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal
