The VMF-124 Death's Heads fly Pacific Fighters version 4.04m. The "m" in the version number stands for "merged". It is merged because it includes all the aircraft from IL-2 Sturmovik's "Forgotten Battles" and the "Aces Expansion Pack". There are two different ways to install this from scratch: an easy way and a more laborious way.

Method 1: The Easy Way

Purchase a NEW (not used) copy of Pacific Fighters. It should have all the patches applied and be ready to go. Choose the merged install option from the install interface.

Method 2: The Old School Way

Here's what you need to buy:

  • IL-2 Forgotten Battles Gold Pack (includes AEP); and,
  • Pacific Fighters
Then, install in the following order:
  1. IL-2 Forgotten Battles
  2. Aces Expansion Pack (AEP)
  3. Pacific Fighters (I believe when you install Pacific Fighters it gives you the option of a Standalone or Merged install. Choose the merged install.)
Download patches and install in following order:
  1. pf_v303m.exe (100Mb) > installs over versions 3.0 (out-of-the-box), 3.01 and 3.02
  2. pf_v303m_to_v304m.exe (19.3Mb) > installs over version 3.03 merged
  3. pf401m.exe (141Mb) > installs over version 3.03/3.04 merged
  4. pf402m.exe (30Mb) >
  5. pf403m.exe (154.5Mb)
  6. pf404m.exe (21.8Mb)
That should be it :)
