Brief history on Marine Fighting Squadron (VMF)-124 during WWII.

VMF-124 was formed on 7 September 1942. The squadron arrived on Guadalcanal on 11 February 1943. (The Japanese had largely been driven off the island in the preceding days.)

VMF-124 remained in the Solomon Islands until 7 September 1943, participating in several campaigns:

  1. Russell Islands
  2. New Georgia (Munda airfield taken, July 1943)
  3. Vella Lavella (land battle August-October 1944; airfield captured September 1943)

Following their tour in the Solomons, VMF-124 returned to the USA for reorganization and training. VMF-124 departed the USA, joined by VMF-213, on 18 September 1944.

After assignment to the USS Essex (CV 9), VMF-124 and VMF-213 participated in actions against:

  1. Okinawa (10 October 1944 and several other strikes to follow)
  2. Formosa (12-14 October 1944 and several other strikes to follow)
  3. Luzon (supporting the occupation of Mindoro 14-16 December 1944, and several other strikes to follow)
  4. Lingayen
  5. Tokyo (February 1945)
  6. Iwo Jima (23 March-28 May 1945)
  7. Japanese home islands (10 July-15 August 1945)
